Charity bicycle ride to help fight homelessness. sponsored by Emmaus, Inc in Haverhill, MA. On a typical night, they house 300 people and have provided hundreds of thousands of meals. Great cause, great organization. Did I mention I "won" this year ?! I was first 100 mile rider back ...20.3 mph avg for a sub 5 hour century!! http://www.firstgiving.com/michaelfoley1
And what a ride ... I rode a sub 5 hour century at 20.3 mph!!! First rider in....I won! (well, ok, I know you can't win a charity ride)
I was in the front group the whole way ...a group of about 20 riders at mile 50. All pacelining. I never rode hard ...I take that back...I did light it up just north of Hampton and was pulling the group at over 30 mph. But other than that ...kept my cards close to my chest. At mile 50 I felt as fresh as when I rolled out of bed.
At mile 60 ...Stefano took a hard pull that started to fracture the cohesiveness of the group. I started messing around ...letting gaps open .... whining .."How many miles have we done? I'm spent..." ...let myself yo-yo off the back, etc... Throw them a mickey and obfuscate my intentions .... to win!
Mile 75 ...Don on the white Cervelo started riding hard. Stefano and I joined him. I took a chance that this group of 3 (Don, Stefano, me) could hold everybody off to the finish. Don was strong...and Stefano was crushing it .... but would we stick together? Or would cooperation melt down and our effort be wasted? At first Don was uncooperative ...trying to drop us. But after he played himself out on his pulls I pulled through and said "Thank you for the pull" ...then gave a cooperative but monster pull. Soon Don seemed convinced it was best to ride cooperatively and was saying stuff like "If we stick together blah blah blah...". Stefano I gave my only water bottle....I had no water on the last 25 miles. Sacrifice. So the bonds of cooperation between us were sealed.
We rode well together until the final 1K. On this 25 miles ...I started taking serious pulls to keep us away. I still felt great.
With 1K to go I went zone 5 and attacked them...gapped them good ...and time-trialed solo to the finish. 20.3 mph ...sub 5-hour ...I was first rider in.
The real winner is Emmaus and the hundreds of homeless people they...er, WE ...helped!
I have left the sound up on the first part just to show how much it hurts to be hit by flying key rings
